ABC/D 06.09.15: You’ve got a Rocketship!

There are some tech tools that you use every day — you know, like Gmail or Outlook. For me, the list of Safari bookmarks I open daily includes Trello, Buffer, Medium, Product Hunt, Feedly and Pocket!

I’m an avid user of Pocket — thoroughly enjoy how it allows me to collect all of my favourite content in one place while also serving as a read later service. Sadly, I’m guilty of ‘pocket’-ing more than I read. You?

I’m obviously not the only one! Pocket has 20 million registered users who have saved over 2 billion articles and videos for later. You can’t seriously believe everyone has read all of their saves 😉

The point to note, however, is that these 20 million users are being serviced by a team of 20 people! No jokes. That is truly a lean startup team!

In today’s era of venture-backed and bloated startup teams, it’s refreshing to hear a company back itself and its employees to deliver the best product and service for millions of customers.

The greatest lesson from this story, I feel, is to not get caught up in the idea of ‘bigger team, bigger company’. And like Nate Weiner, founder & CEO, says: ‘find ways to make people outside of your walls part of your company’.

There comes a point for every startup when you’ve got to decide between perfection and progression. The first is a stable characteristic and the second is a dynamic conversation. Choose wisely.
